Denia Costa Blanca

July 1 - July 29, 2023

Overview

When Spain experienced its tourism boom in the 70s, developers fortunately, overlooked some of the most beautiful portions of the Mediterranean coastline. The biggest flaw of the Denia region has become its most precious asset: the lack of a nearby major international airport. It has remained a quaint city that stayed away from mass urbanization. Denia has preserved its unique setting between the sea and mountains.

Students enrolling in our Magellan Solo program in Denia will experience the beauty of a Mediterranean town, as most were at one time, and the genuine characters of its welcoming inhabitants. Homestay families, caring teachers, unique excursions and local friends will help students to call Denia “home” in a matter of days. A balance of morning classes, activities in the afternoon, followed by time on pristine beaches harmoniously blend to make this experience an unforgettable adventure. Improving language in such a unique Spanish seaside town guarantees a timeless summer.

Denia (pop. 44,855): There is evidence of human habitation in the area since prehistoric times and there are significant Iberian ruins on the hillsides nearby overlooking the Mediterranean. In the 4th century BC Denia was a Greek colony and was mentioned by the greek geographer and philosopher Strabo as Hemeroscòpion. It was an ally of Rome during the Punic Wars, and later was absorbed into the Roman Empire under the name of Dianum. In the 1st century BC Quintus Sertorius established a Roman naval base. Denia was an arabic stronghold for a few centuries then reconquered by the Christians in 1244. It was returned to the Aragonese Crown in 1455 and was acquired by the Spanish Crown in 1803, after which Denia gained an increasingly important role as a trading port. A community of English raisin traders lived in Denia from 1800 until the time of the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. Denia is home to a castle on a rocky crag overlooking the city. It was built in the 11th and 12th century during the muslim occupation. It was rebuilt by the French army during the Peninsular War in the early 19th century. It offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean sea, the city and the surrounding area. The Palace of the Governor and its museum is located in the castle. Further details on the history and culture of the city can be found at the local museum dedicated to the city’s history.
